Old basement drainage systems typically consisted of a perforated pipe laid along the perimeter of the basement floor, connecting to a sump or drain tile. The water collected by the pipe was then pumped out of the basement using a sump pump. These systems were often inefficient, allowing water to seep into the basement through cracks in the walls or floor. Newer systems include more advanced components such as French drains, which consist of a gravel-filled trench that allows water to drain away from the foundation, and battery-operated backup sump pumps to ensure continued operation during power outages.
