Smoke Alarm Placement Guidelines

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms should be placed on every level of a home, including in all bedrooms. UL recommends placing them at least 3 feet from any wall or obstruction and on the ceiling or high on a wall. The International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC) require smoke alarms to be installed in bedrooms, as well as outside all sleeping areas.
